Stabat Mater (2005)

Paul van Gulick

The 'Stabat Mater' (2005) is dedicated to his departed father, Wouth van Gulick. Paul van Gulick finds that he’s able to reach the essence of himself more and more.

The 'Stabat Mater' is a logical continuation of his way of composing. In this composition, melody, counterpoint and harmony are important characteristics. The tenor soloist has got an important role in this composition. While composing Paul was thinking of an opera voice like that of Alex Vermeulen. Yet, he can imagine that this 'Stabat Mater' can be sung by a soprano as well.

The premiere took place in the 'Hoge School' in The Hague.

In 2007 Paul was invited by Maestro Mikola Sukach to conduct the Stabat Mater in Chernigov. In June, Maestro Sukach gave him a chance to conduct the Stabat Mater at a festival in Kiev with the same orchestra and choir. Soprano Kimiko Takaya was the soloist in Chernogov and also sang in Kiev. That year, the Stabat Mater was performed another three times in France and once in Breda. Soprano soloist was Ireen van Bijnen.
